In October 2008 I attended a bus tour through Namibia. Namibia is one of the more advanced African countries. There is a remarkably good infrastructure, and travelling is relatively (!) safe. The country not only offers breathtaking landscapes (mostly desert and savanna) and a diverse wildlife, it is also a treasure trove of African and European culture and history. Apart from many other impressions, I was amazed to find so many traces of German influence more than 90 years after Germany lost her colony "Deutsch-Südwest Afrika" during WW I. Many towns, villages, and streets still bear their old German names, and there are countless well-preserved buildings and monuments from the colonial era throughout the country. Even the German language is still wide-spread, and there is a good chance you can order your Bockwurst and Windhoek Lager (excellent!) in German. After this experience, I was not surprized to learn that the Namibians still brew their beer according to the German Purity Law of 1516.
